There is a new game being created to promote abstinence in teenage girls. A girl wins points if she says no to a boy. First of all, we can see the utterly undeniable sexism in this idea and because it is so obvious I’ll just skip that rant. What is more annoying about this is that instead of teaching against peer pressure they should be teaching the safety and risks involved in sex. This video game is pretty much peer pressure in itself. They are just purely telling the kids not to do something without any information about why. So often our society does not start with the root problem. Maybe before teaching girls to “just say no”, they should teach the boys how to properly put on a condom and how to rub a clit before he asks. Sex isn’t the issue, safety is. Let the kids make up their own minds.
In the game a boy tries to seduce you and you have to say no in order to get points… I mean, what a cockblock, right!? I guess I could use the game to jump start my own little fantasy of getting it on in a public school.
I thought we were moving away from the abstinence only approach, it has only proven time and again to not work. We need to teach children from the beginning the appropriate names for different parts of the body and their function in both women and men. We can’t be afraid of our bodies.
On the other hand, the game Privates is about how our bodies work, from how sperm gets into the vagina to sexually transmitted diseases. No one is saying that anything you do is wrong or right. No Bullshit. Just the facts. This is the game that will really help kids understand their bodies and the consequences of our actions towards whether or not they take care of their bodies. That is suppose to be the point of our current sex education, right?
I like the way Blue Violet says it: “Think of [abstinence only programs] as creationism in schools: optional to include in curricula but privately funded only. Fire the f— out of anyone with a religious agenda in a position of power in relation to public health. We are a nation of many faiths — most of which are not being served with this nonsense.”
The Obama administration recently made budget for over a 114 million dollars in sex education that expands beyond abstinence only. Abstinence will still be taught as a way we can guarantee 100% disease free and pregnant free bodies because that is true, but we are still broadening the boundaries of sex education. We need to also teach that masturbation is a 100% safe form of sex. Opening people up to and giving people all the options and possibilities is what gives our society freedom and equality. It creates the democracy America is based on. In this case, teaching the possibilities of pleasure and the risks that go along with it.
I tried to embed the videos on here, but wordpress wasn’t having it. Sorry folks!
